How to Use a Shower Caddy as a Vertical Planter
INSIDE: How to use a shower caddy as an outdoor vertical wall planter for small pots, urban gardening. Easy garden spring outdoor decor!
My mother saves a lot of stuff. Sometimes the most random items are brought over. Do I really need a collection of plastic takeout salad boxes? (Ironically, I did keep a couple of those boxes in order to dye coffee filters for this pumpkin project. Go figure they’d come in handy.)
One such peculiar item hauled to my house was a metal shower caddy. For all I know, this was probably saved from my college days…way too many years ago! This random goody I did snatch up knowing immediately what I’d do with it…
HOW TO USE A SHOWER CADDY AS A VERTICAL PLANTER
For the longest time, this shower caddy sat gathering dust in our garage. Even though I had a plan in mind, finding the time was the problem. Story of all of our lives, right? And then the kids discovered it. Before I knew it, it was jerry rigged behind a tricycle and was being wildly dragged throughout the backyard like a makeshift u-Haul trailer. Time to stop what I was working on and give this shower caddy a purpose other than making sparks along the back porch!
Supplies:
– Metal shower caddy
– Spray paint (So many awesome spray paint color varieties out there!)
– Optional: Self-etching primer (Great for covering plastic with paint.)
– Drill + masonry bit (optional)
– Optional: Masonry screw
– Wire snips
– Small potted plants (I used 4″ terra cotta pots to fill the shower caddy vertical planter)
HOW TO REPURPOSE SHOWER CADDY INTO SMALL WALL GARDEN
The shower caddy I was using had two plastic knobs where one would typically hang a loofah or wash cloth. I gave these two knobs a spray with self-etching primer. (This primer helps to adhere paint on plastic items.)
Cover the metal shower caddy with a couple coats of spray paint in the color of your choosing.
If the shower caddy has a soap dish, use all the [wo]manpower you have to cut through the metal using the wire snips. I will admit to uttering a few frustrated choice words. Clearly my every-other-day free weights workout was not helping me!
We used a masonry drill bit to drill a hole through a brick wall and inserted a masonry screw. Select the drill bit and screw appropriate for where you will hang your shower caddy vertical planter.
Hang the shower caddy onto the wall and insert small potted plants.
